Small Town Murder Community Theater

Last night we had an opportunity to do two pretty cool things.  We were able to go to the opening night of the brand new Argenta Community Theater in North Little Rock, Arkansas and check out what we like to call a Rural Canadian Gothic film.  Now rural Canadian Gothic film is not that different from what we like to call Southern Gothic films in tone or story, but that doesn't hurt it. The film is called Small Town Murder Songs and stars Peter Stormare (Fargo and Armageddon) and Jill Hennessy (Law & Order and Crossing Jordan).  The music in the film was fantastic, and Kanye West needs to see it to discover the band Bruce Peninsula so he can sample them like crazy.  Their music creates visually arresting scenes that would probably not have had the same affect if another band had been used.

The film revolves around a small town cop who has to do his first murder investigation after a young woman's body is found by the lake.  The town hasn't seen a murder in over fifty years and he's a little in over his head.  The Ontario Provincial Police have come in to help him on this case (We're assuming that's what OPP means).  This is a small town where everyone knows everyone and the local police know that this dead woman is not from around there, but quite possibly the suspects are.  The film really asks questions about what happens when everyone knows each other including the police and the suspect and how can a geniune investigation take place. Jokes are made about how the only thing the main character knows about investigating murders was from watching CSI.  Actually CSI came up a lot in the Q & A afterward with director Ed Gass-Donnelly when he wanted people to know that if this was an episode of CSI it would have been a bad episode of CSI.  This film was way better than any episode of CSI we've seen.  Check out the trailer down below.

The only issue we had with the screening was a technical one that involved the projection not having the correct aspect ratio causing the film to look a little squished.  But this was the opening night and the folks over at Argenta Community Theater shouldn't be blamed for this and we're sure they'll fix that in the future.  The space itself was quite amazing and a lot of good things are going to happen in central Arkansas because of this space.  The opening night film of the Little Rock Film Festival which we're always proud to tout will be held at this space and should draw a large crowd.  It was announced last night to be The Last Ride directed by Harry Thomason and starring Henry Thomas as Hank Williams, Sr. in his last few days.
