The Dark Knight of Facebook

from filmschoolrejects.com
It was announced today that Warner Brothers will be trying out a new distribution platform for their home entertainment offerings.  That platform is Facebook and the first film is The Dark Knight.  They're going to charge you $3 to rent it for 48 hours, but when it sells for $10 on Bluray at Target I don't know that it's really a great deal.  Especially if you plan on watching it 4 times in the coming years.  It is an interesting concept none the less.

For now we'll most likely stick with Netflix for our online content provider, even though I do wonder what they're going to do to combat this.  But basically we're all at the whim of the studios.  If they decide they can make more money self distributing on Facebook, soon they will pull out of Netflix (already WB seems to have the least offerings on there).  Like the recent post on The X-Files and its soon departure, it's really up to the studios on what and how long they offer something on there.

WB says this is a trial for them and they're going to roll out other titles in the coming months. They also rolled this and Inception out in the form of a smart phone app last month, and we haven't seen any news on how well that's done.  It's a brave new world for entertainment.
