Budget or Binge? :: Animal Sweaters

Animal Sweaters

I’m really loving the whimsy of animal sweaters lately. Something about a big, comfy sweater that prominently features a lion’s or a tiger’s face is so childlike and fun. Layered over leggings or under a blazer, there’s really no end to the styling possibilities too. These two are a couple of my favorites and represent the high-end and the more affordable options that are out there. What do you think? Would you go budget or binge on this trend?

Weekend Casual

Cardigan- Zara, Dress- Collective Concepts, Shoes- Target, Bag- Old, Jewelry- Angel Court Jewels

We spent our weekend trying to stay out of a film crew’s way. We donated the use of our home to be the setting of a short film and before we knew it, the house was overflowing with PAs, set designers, gaffers, photogs and even a director or two. Needless to say, we had no fancy-pants plans so it was a casual few days around the Nickels compound.

Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head…

Rainy Day Outfit

Jacket- Marc Jacobs, Tank- Old, Shorts- Old, Scarf- Juicy Couture, Boots- Burberry, Jewelry- Angel Court Jewels

Lately this has been my go-to rainy day outfit: years old bubble hem shorts, a military inspired denim jacket and a messy fishtail braid. I throw on my {sloppily folded over} rain boots and I’m all set… for the most part. At one point in time the boots made a nice little set complete with matching umbrella that always reminded me of my two seasons spent in London. Sadly, the umbrella’s current whereabouts are unknown so my matching set is down to a pair of oddly fitting boots that I sloppily fold over.

Trailer for Spielberg’s Lincoln

Here is the trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. This is one of the movies I am most excited about this year. It is possibly one of the most anticipated movies of Spielberg’s career. He has said that it took him nearly 11 years to get this film made.

What do you think about the trailer? Let us know!

Fall Favorites:: Leather + Oxblood

Leather Oxblood

Lately I’ve been finding it incredibly interesting how quickly one’s taste can do a complete 180. I say this because that’s exactly what mine have done. I used to abhor the thought of burgundy. I mean it’s just red mixed with brown. But this season they’ve rebranded it as “oxblood” and I’m totally in. In fact, the other day something struck me and I could not wait to get home and paint my toes the deep red hue.

Another large trend for the fall is leather. I used to think anything {other than a jacket} comprised of leather was just tacky. But the last couple of weeks I’ve come to realize how much interest the material can add to an otherwise simple item of clothing. Be it teeny details or the entire thing. I can’t wait for it to get cool enough for me to experiment with it myself.

Back to School

Top, Sweater, Shorts- Model’s own {American Eagle}, Clutch- Andy Warhol, Shoes- Model’s own, Necklaces- Angel Court Jewels, Earrings- David Yurman

Something about a collared shirt peeking out from under a sweater feels decidedly “back to school” to me. That said, I had to throw in a little studded heel edginess to even things out. Can you imagine walking into the first day of school looking like this lady? She’d own it in no time flat!

Dream Room :: Home Office

Until recently I had never even dreamed that I might one day have a home office. Our teeny little two bedroom home couldn’t really accommodate overnight guests and a pleasant workspace. But after the bed frame in our second bedroom went matressless for nearly a year, Justin decided it was time to make practical use of the space. He’s now got a fully working editing station set up in there and I’m just dreaming of what to do with my corner of the room. Now I won’t show you what it looks like at the moment, but I will share with you what I’d love to see there one day!

Baked Sweet Potato Chips

If there's one thing the Nickels family embraces, it's a healthy snack disguised as a... not-so-healthy one. And when it's "burger" (or some variation thereof (veggie, typically)) night at our house, we need something equally satisfying to go with it. Last night it was homemade, baked sweet potato chips. Here's how I made them!

First of all, I highly, highly recommend using a mandolin to slice your potato. Unless you're an Iron Chef (in which case, what are you doing reading my recipe posts? don't you already know how to make these?), it would be extremely difficult to slice it thin and evenly enough to get a good texture.

Preheat your oven to 400. If you're baking them for two, one sweet potato should be plenty. Slice your sweet potato, pulling out any slices that come out smaller than average (they'll burn too quickly).

Toss your "chips" with about 2 tablespoons of olive oil.

Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray and lay out your chips in a single layer. I know this is a little tedious, but believe me, it's worth it to lay each one out  individually so they cook evenly.

Place the baking sheet(s) in the oven for about 15 minutes. Take them out, flip your chips over and put them back in for 10-15 more minutes depending on your oven. Keep a good eye on them. My oven's new so I'm still learning where its hot spots are. A few of mine came out burned.

As soon as you take them out of the oven salt (and pepper if you want, I did) them and let them cool for a few minutes.

If you make them, let me know how they turn out! Enjoy!

Going Gidget

Dress- Asos, Belt- BCBGMAZAZRIA, Shades- Kate Spade, Necklace- Passed down from my great aunt, Earrings- Angel Court Jewels, Bracelets- Have You Been There?, JewelMint, Nails- Essie, Fear or Desire,  Keela- North Little Rock Animal Shelter

My hands-down, all-time favorite movie is Gidget Goes Hawaiian. My mom introduced me to the Gidget "trilogy" when I was pretty young and it's been my security-blanket-in-movie-form ever since. If you're ever feeling sad, anxious, alone or any other generally bad feeling, I guarantee Gidget's quirky, naive wholeseomeness will turn your frown upside down in 101 minutes or less.

This floral print and A-line skirt combined with a smooth ponytail and vaguely cat-eye shaped shades had a distinctly Gidget feel to me.

New Song from Joshua of Velvet Kente

We're pretty big fans of both Velvet Kente and Amasa Hines. Not so coincidentally they're fronted by the same man. Joshua. He's one of Little Rock's best voices and we think you should definitely give him a listen!
