Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

There is a mole in the very highest echelon of British intelligence.  Tonight we went to see Gary Oldman in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  The film, a Cold War espionage thriller set in 1973 mostly in Great Britain, sets a slow yet deliberate pace with sometimes confusing effects.  Oldman was nominated for an Oscar for his performance this week, and is much deserved.

The film is beautifully shot, and the performances are spot on.  We even get an opportunity to see Tom Hardy act across from Oldman in a slight preview of what's surely to come this summer in the Dark Knight Rises.  The film opens up with a quick trip to Hungary to attempt to extract a Hungarian general with knowledge of who the mole is, and everything goes terribly wrong.  Oldman's character George Smiley has recently retired from British intelligence and for this reason is tapped by the powers that be to discover just who is working for the Soviets.

The nice thing with all the mystery and intrigue you truly don't know who the Mole is until the end of the film.  There are also some surprisingly gory moments scattered through out the film, but the film itself isn't overly violent.  This isn't a James Bond or Mission Impossible film with crazy acrobatic stunts and attention gaining explosions, the spying is done the good old fashioned way with wire taps and investigation.

All in all if you can't catch this film in the theater it's definitely worth it to catch it on dvd.  With Oldman's nomination it might get an extended period in the theater, but if not watch it in your home.  It might even be worth it to watch it twice to make sense of all the confusion.
