And the Thunder Rolls..

from collider.com
Let's preface this by saying we saw this film in 2D.  We did this for two reasons.  1.  The timing of the screening worked out best for us.  2.  It's our understanding that since the 3D version was a post-conversion 3D film that many of the sights were diminished.

We've been big fans of the Iron Man films and the Incredible Hulk film (kind of sad that Edward Norton can't reprise his role as Bruce Banner in next year's Avengers), so we've been waiting with subdued excitement for the strangest of Marvel's superheroes.  The guy's weapon is a freaking hammer, which was first seen at the end of Iron Man 2, it's also the source of his power.

The movie is pretty fast paced, with scenes switching between the small New Mexico town where Natalie Portman's character Jane Foster is studying astro-physics and looking for evidence of wormholes out in the dessert, and the realm of Asgard where Thor is from.  Thor and his brother Loki have spent their entire semi immortal lives hoping to win the favor of their father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) to become the King of Asgard.  It's this rivalry between the two, and Thor's hot headedness that drives this story.  Odin banishes Thor to Earth and the story goes from there.

Our favorite character was Heimdall, which we both had never heard of, but the actor Idris Elba gave him so much presence that we hope we get to see him in more of the Marvel movies.  The only part we really had a problem with was the relationship between Jane and Thor.  It never felt like we got to see them interact enough to make their relationship believable.  Maybe if she's in The Avengers we'll feel better about it.

We recommend this movie, because it's a fun ride, and there is a cameo of another Avenger in the middle of the movie.  If you see it and can't figure out who it is email us.  ALSO... Stay after the credits, there's another scene (most fans of these movies should know this, but some of the folks in theater seemed to not).  Kenneth Branagh has taken characters that could have been 100% ridiculous and made them seem to fit in the same world as Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.  Also there was a trailer for Captain America right before the movie and Mallory is really excited to see it now!
