Fairly Predictable

Mallory here with your post-Academy Award lowdown! If you've followed the 2011 awards season at all you probably already had a good idea of how the Oscars would go down. We all kind of knew that The King's Speech would win billions of awards, that The Fighter's supporting actors would be recognized (that Melissa Leo would give an obnoxious acceptance speech), and that Natalie Portman would take home a gold man for her good-girl-gone-crazy role in Black Swan. Not that we're complaining- those are all legit movies- but come on, a little upset here and there makes for some good celebrities-on-a-reality-show-like entertainment.

We were very pleased with Anne Hathaway's and James Franco's "Ensemble Performance In A Hosting Role." Her big, outgoing personality balanced his (possibly pot-induced?)  laid-back vibes nicely. They hit all the comedic notes from dry wit to slapstick very well. We loved seeing Anne musically poke fun at Hugh Jackman for "ditching {her} at the last minute" for a duet and we laughed out loud at James coming on stage dressed as Marilyn Monroe. But the hosts weren't the only ones instigating chuckles. Kirk Douglas had us on the edge of our seats with his intentionally prolonged announcement of Best Supporting Actress and we kind of hope Colin Firth wins from now on just so we can hear his dry, British (but humble) acceptance speeches.

I think Justin was personally offended that Christopher Nolan didn't win the directing Oscar for his fav of last year, Inception. However we still haven't seen The King's Speech so we can't speak to Tom Hooper's directing abilities. Justin did feel that Inception was somewhat redeemed when Wally Pfister won for cinematography because, "he is doing wonderful things" (man-crush alert?).

All in all, the 2011 Oscars were a success. Despite their predictability, we haven't lost faith in the acedemy. Yet. ;)
